CERAMICS
Ceramicist Facilitator of Traditional Arts and Crafts Born in Lisbon, she has lived and worked in Aljezur since 2001, where she has developed an artistic practice deeply rooted in the landscape, memory and cultural identity of the Costa Vicentina. Trained at the Escola António Arroio and certified in the Facilitation of Traditional Arts and Crafts, she has complemented her training through a self-taught path, developing a distinctive artistic language that combines knowledge of traditional ceramic techniques with a contemporary approach. In 2008, she co-founded the Burros & Artes project, a cultural tourism initiative promoting the connection between art, heritage, nature and community, recognised by National Geographic Traveller (UK) in its "Best of the World 2021" selection. In her artistic practice, ceramics become a medium for expressing landscape, exploring the relationship between land, sea and memory. Her works seek to reveal the beauty of the Costa Vicentina's natural elements through a contemporary sculptural language, where tradition, identity and sustainability meet.
Elsa Ribeiro's pieces are unique and handcrafted, inspired by rural everyday life and by the region's flora and fauna. The artist translates these elements in an organic and expressive way, often with humour and tenderness.
Her creations include figurative sculptures, utilitarian pieces and decorative works that reflect the colours and textures of the Algarve.
Traditional
Traditional Algarvian pottery is characterised by a strong connection to local materials, hand techniques passed down through generations, and an aesthetic that draws on diverse cultural influences. The simplest pottery, made from functional, handmade terracotta, is used mainly for structural purposes, while decorative pieces are inspired by motifs from nature and the sea.
The donkey, an animal on the verge of extinction, is brought into the present day through Elsa's good-humoured perspective, taking on a new approach and personality. The little houses, meanwhile, depict everyday life as imagined through the memories of her childhood.

Sea breezes
"Maresias". The word alone conjures the salty scent carried by the sea breeze, that cool air which clings to the skin and to the memory of anyone who grew up near the coast. It is under this name that the artist gathers all the works born of the sea — not merely as a theme, but as a breath, a constant echo running through her work, lending it a broader and deeper dimension.

Tiles
In Elsa Ribeiro's tiles, Portuguese tradition finds a new way to express itself. Each piece unites technique, memory, and color, in a movement reminiscent of waves breaking on the Aljezur coast, transforming clay into a hymn to the Portuguese soul. More than decoration, her art is light, sea, and land—proof that the ancestral, when touched by the heart, becomes timeless.

Magnets
These pieces are more than just souvenirs of Aljezur; they are handmade, one by one, with meticulous attention to detail. Each handcrafted gesture and brushstroke makes each piece unique, and despite its size, it seeks to capture something of the Algarve's essence—small in form, but grand in spirit.
