OUR HISTORY

‘Burros e Artes’ is a project that began in Aljezur in 2008. It was Founded by Elsa Ribeiro, who is dedicated to the arts, and Sofia von Mentzingen, who specialises in donkeys,

This initiative resulted from the union of their talents and passions to combine donkey rides through nature with traditional arts and crafts, offering varied experiences in the discovery of this region, its nature, culture and traditions.

André da Costa joined the project in 2021 in collaboration with Artes, organising the experiences, allowing Elsa to develop her passion for creating artistic handicrafts.

Traditional Arts and Crafts Facilitator

Artisan

Elsa Ribeiro

She is co-founder of the Burros & Artes project (2008), a landmark initiative in the region's cultural tourism, which fosters the meeting of craftsmanship, heritage, nature and community. Through ceramics and participatory activities, the project contributes to enhancing the value of the territory and to authentic cultural experiences connected to the rural way of life.

Trained at the Escola Artística António Arroio, in Lisbon, and a Certified Professional Facilitator in Traditional Arts and Crafts, her path has also been shaped by self-taught learning.

Her pieces draw inspiration from the land, the sea and the surrounding landscape, reflecting the identity of the Costa Vicentina. The figure of the donkey, a central element in her work, symbolises rural memory and also plays a significant role in raising awareness for the preservation of the donkey breed, currently under threat of extinction, incorporating innovative cultural and educational practices.

Elsa Ribeiro's work is now part of the dynamics of sustainable cultural tourism, offering visitors an experience that bridges art, heritage, nature and local identity, reinforcing Portugal's Algarve — and Aljezur in particular — as a territory of creation, authenticity and connection.
